2020 WIIS-Canada Awards!

WIIS-Canada is excited to announce our new national awards campaign! Nominations are now open for prizes described below. Finalists will be invited to Toronto to attend an awards gala on May 8th!

The 2020 WIIS-Canada awards celebrates professionals and students working in the field of security, broadly defined. We are open to nominees working on a wide range of issues, including defence, cyber security, conflict dynamics, environment and climate change, national and international law, migration and refugees, human rights, violence, discrimination, development and peace, and more.

Eligibility requirements for each prize are listed below. WIIS-Canada membership is open to all genders. Only WIIS-Canada members may nominate someone for a prize. However, self-nominations by members are very welcome.

Professional Awards

Best Article Award

The Best Article Award is awarded to the most outstanding academic article published in 2018 or 2019. Submissions must be original, full-length, peer-reviewed journal articles that address a global security issue, broadly defined. Papers may address a wide range of topics, such as great power conflict, climate change and security, migration crises, cyber security, human rights, civil wars, terrorism, international and national security law, etc. Eligible articles must have been published in the last two years, appearing in a peer-reviewed journal in either 2018 or 2019.

Authors and co-authors must be members of WIIS-Canada in order to be considered for this award. Authors are invited to self-nominate their articles. To apply, please submit a PDF version of the full article. Please limit your justification for nomination to 250 words.

Inspirational Leader Award

The Inspirational Leader Award is awarded for an outstanding contribution to professional practice, research, and/or public service. This award recognizes inspirational leadership, professional excellence, and demonstrated impact in the field of security, broadly defined. WIIS-Canada welcomes nominees from public service, defence, law, journalism, academia, and other fields. The prize recognizes leadership at many different levels, and values community, provincial, regional, national, and/or international impact. Nominations will be evaluated based on professional achievement, pioneering initiatives, mentoring emerging scholars and professionals, promoting equity and diversity, and/or demonstrations of courageous leadership in the face of adversity.

Although anyone can be nominated for this prize, only WIIS-Canada members can put forward a nominee. WIIS-Canada members are also very welcome to submit self-nominations. To apply, please submit the nomination form, a 250 word candidate statement, and CV.

WIIS-Canada Justice Award

The WIIS-Canada Justice Award is awarded for outstanding contribution to the field of law and security, broadly defined. The Award is presented to a woman lawyer who has shown a dedication to the advancement of international and national security law through practice and/or scholarship. We welcome nominees from a range of professional backgrounds, including international security and criminal law, international human rights or humanitarian law, migration and security, Canadian defence and security law, and beyond.  Nominations will be evaluated based on professional achievement, demonstrated commitment to justice, mentoring the next generation, and/or demonstrations of courageous leadership in the face of adversity.

Nominees must be lawyers in good standing of a Law Society in a Province or Territory of Canada. Although any woman lawyer can be nominated for this prize, only WIIS-Canada members can put forward a nominee. WIIS-Canada members are also very welcome to submit self-nominations. Emerging Leader Award

The Emerging Leader Award recognizes a student or recent graduate who has demonstrated inspirational leadership and outstanding professional potential in the field of security, broadly defined. This prize considers a wide range of criteria in evaluating excellence, including academic research, community or military service, and volunteer and humanitarian work, as well as other demonstrations of leadership, resilience, and social impact. WIIS-Canada welcomes student nominees who have made contributions at a local, regional, national, or global level, and demonstrate strong promise of future professional leadership. Special consideration will be given to nominees who have overcome personal adversity, as well as to those that have a demonstrated commitment to advancing equity in the field of security.

Although anyone can be nominated for this prize, only WIIS-Canada members can put forward a nominee. WIIS-Canada members are also welcome to submit self-nominations, and students are encouraged to put themselves forward for this prize. WIIS-Canada Law Student Award

The WIIS-C Law Student Award is presented to an outstanding law student who is actively involved in the field of law and security, broadly defined. The award is presented to an excellent law student working on topics such as  international security and criminal law, international human rights or humanitarian law, migration and security, Canadian defence and security law, and the like. In assessing ‘active involvement’, emphasis will be placed on community involvement, extracurricular activities, and/or participating in a community legal clinic. Nominations will be assessed holistically, with evaluations based on academic achievements as well as community involvement.

Nominees must be registered as full-time students in one of the JD, LL.M. or LL.D., or PhD programs at a recognized law school in Canada. Although any woman lawyer can be nominated for this prize, only WIIS-Canada members can put forward a nominee. WIIS-Canada members are also very welcome to submit self-nominations.
